Conclusions of ‘Another Albion Adventure’ July 2012.. ‘Another Albion Adventure’ started in fine style on the 26th May 2012 from Warminster Civic Centre at 9.00am. The planned route was to drive to Poole in Dorset and turn left,then, travel the entire coast of mainland Britain over the next 30 days. However the 1937 Albion lorry (type CL122) which was to be our mode of transport had other idea’s and gave notice at Chichester that all was not well. Sadly at this time he decision was taken to be returned to base by low loader. However not to be beaten at such an early stage we set of again the next day in my part owned (with Graham Mears of Wells in Somerset), an Austin A40 pickup truck of 1951, taking a slightly different route to Kent so that our pre-booked overnight stops would still be in place. For the next 26 days we travelled the coast, over 4000 miles, staying in places like Margate, Hunstanton, Grimsby, Inverness, Thurso, taking in John O‘Groats yet again, Ullapool, the Isle of Skye, Dumfries, Barrow in Furness, Morecombe, Prestatyn, Anglesey, Swansea, Nether Stowey, Cornwall, with the necessary stop at Lands End and Lulworth Cove. It was in Cornwall that mechanical problems struck again as the engine of the A40 decided that at that enough was enough, (although only temporarily and not too serious), but after all it had done more in 26 days than in the last 26 years! Good friends in Cornwall came to the rescue and returned us to base yet again to collect the third vehicle of the trip, my 1963 Minivan to finish the venture, as started, in fine style. Donations have been received from many sources including a collection in Swanage and Poole on the last day of the venture by members of the Royal British Legion (organized by Brian Darvill of the Warminster branch) before arriving back to a civic reception in Warminster at 2.00pm on the 23rd June. Tired but happy the intrepid duo had achieved their aim in not one but three different vintage vehicles to travel the coast of mainland Britain, some 4,500 miles in vintage commercial vehicles in 30 days. Our heartfelt thanks to all who helped this venture in anyway, but especially the RBL who were chosen for support as many areas of the RBL have clubs and groups around the coast of the UK which, when approached, freely helped with overnight accommodation for our sponsored event. And Just for the Record for those who may wonder ‘WHY’? The idea was suggested by a fellow vehicle owner who came with us in a 1926 Morris van on our return from our inaugural event in 1999, London to Glasgow for the centenary of the Albion Motor Company and then John O’Groats to Lands End. Although he has sold his vehicle, for us the idea never went away so 12 years later, Bin there, Dun that! as they say - we have been and come back!
